Aug. 7--In Oklahoma, the farmer and the rancher should be friends, but questions remain about the banker and the credit union operator.

For decades, bankers have grumbled about the tax breaks granted to credit unions, the leaders of which have responded that bankers don't seem to be missing any meals.

Credit unions are more competitive with banks than when credit unions first appeared more than 60 years ago. In Oklahoma, nearly 1 million people belong to 86 different credit unions. It's also true that credit unions, particularly those with national charters, enjoy significant tax breaks.
