St. Bernards Medical Center is a 375-bed, not-for-profit, acute-care hospital that has been delivering health care to residents of northeast Arkansas for more than a century.
St. Bernards Hospital was established by the Olivetan Benedictine sisters of Holy Angels Convent in Jonesboro in response to a malarial fever epidemic in northeast Arkansas. It was located in a six-room, two-story frame house located on Matthews Avenue--in the vicinity of the present medical center plant. The first patient was admitted on July 5, 1900.
