* Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) affects roughly 30 percent to 40 percent of all women of childbearing age.
* Approximately five to seven percent of women experience premenstrual symptoms severe enough to disrupt their daily function and meet stringent diagnostic criteria. This condition is called premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) - a severe form of PMS.
* Taking additional calcium in any form may help decrease PMS symptoms. Increasing daily amounts of low-fat dairy products and other foods that contain calcium can help reach the 1,000 to 1,500 mg of calcium daily recommended by health care professionals.
