AFTER being diagnosed with cancer, retired council worker Henry May, 71, had his stomach removed in a total gastrectomy. He lives in Sheerness, Kent, with his wife Maureen, 62, and has two daughters, Tanya, 34, and Cheryl, 32, and seven grandchildren. Here, Henry describes his experience to THEA JOURDAN and his surgeon, Mr Simon Atkinson, explains the procedure.

AS A food lover, I have always been a big eater, enjoying hamburgers and hotdogs especially. The first time I realised something was wrong was when I could not swallow my food properly.
