Bar Harbor has the best of Maine. Located on Mount Desert Island, across a bridge from Maine's mainland, Bar Harbor boasts lobsters galore, laid-back summer nightlife, a big national park and all of the resort-town extras.
Lobsters by day: Take a ride in Frenchman's Bay on the Lulu Lobster Boat (www.lululobsterboat.com) for local history and a demonstration of lobster fishing. The almost two-hour ride costs $25. You can try to catch a bird's-eye view of the creatures at the Atlantic Climbing School (www.acadiaclimbing.com). Instructors help climber get up to the top of Acadia National Park's granite cliffs.
