HE WAS one of the most powerful figures on the waterfront - standing beneath the great cranes, broad of shoulder, quiet of voice, with a steady, unwavering stare.

And his intellect commanded the respect of thousands of men, many of whom profoundly disagreed with him.

For Barry Williams was a Communist - not one of those who hid his true beliefs in the Labour Party or in the spy ring of some posh university, but a man who would tell you straight to the face that he was a member of the party.

He was twice the Communist Parliamentary candidate in Birkenhead, securing 604 votes in 1966 (1.5%) and 351 in 1970.
