Yahoo! is funneling $1 billion in cash into China's largest e-commerce company, Alibaba.com, with plans to merge Yahoo! China into Alibaba in a deal valued at a total of $4 billion - thus creating one of the largest Internet companies in China. In return for its cash and its Yahoo! China business, Yahoo! gets a 40-percent economic interest and 35-percent voting rights in Alibaba.com.
Technically, the melded Yahoo!/Alibaba operations are a "partnership," setting up a business model never before used by an Internet company in China, the two companies say. The entire deal is scheduled for closing in the fourth quarter.
