Aug. 11--Carlsbad -- The Carlsbad school board voted Wednesday to spend almost $5.4 million to upgrade the district's aging lighting and air conditioning fixtures.

In unrelated action, the board also discussed options for handling an anticipated 3,900 students expected in Carlsbad by 2013.

Superintendent John Roach requested the discussion on high school overcrowding to clarify the board's expectations for the future of high school education in Carlsbad. The board has discussed the issue several times over the last few years, and has agreed not to build another high school.
