It may be helpful to read Philippians 1:1-2:18 as one unit, a meditation on the meaning of Paul's imprisonment. Take the Greek noun kenos and its verb kenoo as a starting point. In 2:7 Paul writes about Christ: "but emptied [ekenosen third-person singular aorist] himself, taking the form of a slave." We pick up the noun in 2:16: "It is by holding fast to the word of life that I can boast on the day of Christ that I did not run in vain [kenon] or labor in vain [kenon]."
