Anna Maria Ortese's first book, Angelici dolori, was published by Bompiani of Milan in 1937, under the auspices of Massimo Bontempelli, who praised the book in a meeting of the Italian Academy and awarded it a prize of 5,000 lire--the first of a series of official subsidies given to the near-destitute Ortese through her long life.
