Japanese pharmaceutical firm Eisai has reported better-than-expected first-quarter results, with turnover rising 10.7% to 135.8 billion yen ($1.21 billion). Operating profit was up 20.5% to 22.5 billion yen, while recurring income rose 20.2% to 23.4 billion yen and net income increased 20.4% to 14.9 billion yen.
Revenues in Japan were up 6.3% to 69.1 billion yen and those elsewhere rose 15.8% to 66.7 billion yen. Sales of the firm's Alzheimer's disease drug Aricept (donepezil) increased 21.2% to 41.7 billion yen, with turnover up 11.2% to 9.9 billion yen in Japan.
