AT FIRST we felt fortunate to get a lift of any kind. As two girls miles from home after a weekend away from the Zimbabwe village where we were working, the dilapidated openbacked truck came as a welcome relief when it stopped for us.

We settled down in the back under the February stars and, as the vehicle hurtled along the dust road, we relaxed a bit. The truck then ground to a halt again as some more hitchhikers, standing in a group in the middle of the track, hailed it, too.

I knew they were Zanu-PF thugs straight away. Even in the darkness they were very visible, waiting on the corner for a truck with space to carry ...
