Today, highly profitable operator Marty Klinker is the kind of borrower the Farm Credit System would be eager to include in its portfolio-if only the Fairfield, Mont., grain producer qualified.

As a young farmer with several years of carryover debt and a 60% debt-to-asset ratio in the early 1990s, Klinker launched a parking lot maintenance and landscaping business to extend his season and supplement his farm income.

That initiative helped convince his nervous Farm Credit lender that he was a good risk. Now, Klinker's satellite business far eclipses the revenues he earns from grain farming.
