Guitarist Frisell blazes his own trail on `East/West'.(Arts and Lifestyle)

Some jazz musicians make careers of sounding like other people. Bill Frisell is making his by sounding like himself.

It's not that Frisell doesn't respect tradition. But the Baltimore-born guitarist, who performs tomorrow and Friday at Scullers, has a knack for keeping things fresh.

"East/West," his new double-CD, recorded at the Village Vanguard in New York and at Yoshi's in Oakland, is no exception. Frisell mixes his own compositions with rock, soul, blues and even country classics by Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash.
