Memphis wanted both a new arena and a landmark that would symbolize the city. The Memphis Pyramid, a new 290-ft. -tall structure that is a 60 percent replica of the Great Pyramid of Cheops in Egypt, now satisfies both desires.
Unlike the Egyptian original, the Memphis version houses a 20,000-seat multipurpose arena designed for basketball (where the Memphis State University Tigers play home games) and ice hockey. When the basketball floor is removed, the arena can accommodate 23,000 persons for entertainment events.
