Aug. 18--Consumers already reeling from rising gasoline prices likely will have to contend with higher winter heating costs as well.
Natural gas prices have spiked this month on the spot market, reaching a 52-week high of $9.95 per million British thermal units Wednesday at the Henry Hub in southern Louisiana. In February, the price was $5.88 per million Btu.
A Btu is the amount of heat energy needed to raise the temperature of one pound of water by 1 degree.
One million Btu is roughly analogous to the energy produced by burning 1,000 cubic feet of natural gas. Utilities often reflect this measurement on bills ...
