Until recently, Kenny Lunsford wasn't a cotton farmer. In 2002, the Guyman, Okla., irrigator switched 2,600 acres to cotton, in part because his irrigation wells were running low on water. He's more than doubled his cotton acreage since.
With no neighbors growing cotton, he's left to his own devices when it comes to creating a cotton system that works in his part of the country. One such trick is using corn as a cover crop for cotton, a practice he started in 2004.
Lunsford's fields are vulnerable to blowing, so he does anything he can to avoid leaving cotton seedlings exposed in bare fields. Where cotton follows cotton, ...
