New Deal for Seed.

When it comes to seed corn, Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc. and the brands owned by Monsanto and Syngenta account for about two-thirds of the market. The rest of the market is served by scores of smaller seed companies that must license genetics and traits from outside sources. This requires partnering with a larger company, and lately, there's pressure to sell.

In a bid to shake things up, Syngenta launched a genetics- and trait-licensing business to serve independent companies. In theory, this creates competition with Monsanto, which licenses genetics and traits to companies selling 35% of all seed corn.
