Word on a strategic alliance by two of the largest pay-television companies in the world, Canal Plus and News Corp., ricocheted around the globe last week, with many seeing major implications for the development of digital compression and pay-pre-view for direct-to-home services.
In a statement on Thursday, the two companies said they formed their partnership to take "advantage of future technologies in satellite transmission, digital compression and encryption." They have formed a working group of senior officials to "work out an extensive agreement on programming, technology and strategy."
