In 1991, more than 10,000 veterans of Operation Desert Storm marched up Broadway through a blizzard of ticker tape in the nation's biggest victory celebration since World War II. New York's fierce competition with Washington over which city could put on the flashiest parade made international headlines.
Today, veterans coming back to New York from the latest Iraq war feel estranged in a city more preoccupied with soaring real estate prices than the casualty toll from Baghdad: more than 1,800 U.S. soldiers have been killed since the conflict began.
