The numbers are clear: the hot dog is one of America's favorite foods. The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council (NHDSC) reports that 837 million packages of hot dogs--totaling $1.8 billion--were sold in the U.S. last year.
But that success hasn't stopped producers and trade groups from actively promoting the products. The NHDSC, for instance, designates July as National Hot Dog Month and recently hosted its Annual Hot Dog Lunch on Capital Hill in Washington D.C. Participants included Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), Rep. Colin Peterson (D-MN), and baseball greats Tommy John, Harmon Killebrew, and Luis Tiant.
