The Navy's effort to expand its sealift capacity--a priority emanating from lessons learned in Operation Desert Storm--is surviving strongly as the Clinton administration cuts deeper into overall defense spending, the military's top sealift official told reporters yesterday.
"Everyone has realized the importance of the lift," Vice Adm. Michael Kalleres, commander of the Military Sealift Command (MSC), said at a Defense Writers Group breakfast.
The command has about $2 billion committed to the program, with industry proposals delivered yesterday on converting existing commercial ships to military sealift vessels. A separate group of bids for new ...
