At commencement, those preparing for the next stage of life typically receive some worldly advice, a diploma and a pat on the back. V. Lane Rawlins, the president of Washington State University, got a fly-fishing rod and reel boasting the Cougars mascot.
He retires next week, seven years after assuming the presidency, and is traveling the state this week for a number of farewell receptions. The last is Saturday in Seattle.
Rawlins intends to spend the summer at a cabin in the Yellowstone area. But retirement won't be entirely about fly-fishing.
