When one is faced with combat as our armed service personnel are today, fear can become a hindrance or an aid. I can't remember being afraid of dying or getting hurt, but I do remember the fear of not performing as I was trained. I do remember the fear of failing. Would I remember what I was trained to do? My fear was of doing something, or failing to do something, and get someone else hurt or killed. I do remember wanting to be a dependable force for my unit and squad. Watching the "old timers" (those who had been in country longer than six months) and listening to their advice became important to all "new bies."
