A survey of practitioners' attitudes toward research in technical communication. (Special Issue: Research in Technical Communication)

SUMMARY

This study examines the attitudes toward and uses of published research of a large, random sample of practitioners selected from the membership of the Society for Technical Communication. The results clearly show that practitioners value research in technical communication; they use it to solve problems in the work-place. In contrast, they spend little time reading technical communication studies published in the field's major academic journals. Through a comparison of various practitioner subgroups, the study reveals several important differences in attitudes toward and uses of research.
