Among the many startling statements in this book, perhaps none is more jarring than the following, coming as it does toward the end of a remorseless attack on the thought of John Stuart Mill: "An attempt has been made throughout to avoid the imposition of any preconceived interpretive perspective on Mill's writings, to allow his corpus to speak for itself" (328).
