Article: Arab steel market set to double.

Demand for finished steel in the Arab world is expected to double to about 30 million tonnes a year by 2000, while production is expected to be only 15 million tonnes. This was one of the central forecasts presented at the Arab Iron & Steel Union (AISU) conference in Marrakech, Morocco in October. The rise in demand is expected to be most pronounced in the less developed countries with large populations such as Morocco, Algeria, Egypt and Syria. Increased industrialisation in these countries will result in a significant rise in per capita steel consumption, the AISU says.
