Sir Philip Sassoon (1888-1939) and his sister Sybil (1894-1989) were among the most prominent members of the Anglo-Jewish aristocracy. Descended from wealthy Baghdadi Jews who came to England from India in the late nineteenth century, they socialized with those at the very top of the British social pyramid, including members of the royal family, yet they were always viewed as outsiders who were "not quite English."
