Rethinking the Great Depression. By Gene Smiley. (Chicago: Ivan R. Dee, 2002. Pp. xii, 179. $24.95.)
It is no easy task to cover a complex historical transformation such as the Great Depression in 165 pages. The author writes in a clear, engaging, and jargon-free style and does a good job of outlining the key events of the period for nonspecialists. Readers should be warned, though, that they are given one idiosyncratic view of the Great Depression; the author makes no attempt to survey competing explanations and rarely even mentions alternatives.
