The U.S.-Canadian Free Trade Agreement, which went into effect Jan. 1, 1989, will remove all tariff and some non-tariff barriers to agricultural trade between the two countries by Jan. 1, 1998. For agriculture, the elimination of trade restraints means producers in both countries have the opportunity to be more competitive and meet the demand for agricultural goods. Since the signing of the agreement, U.S. agricultural exports to Canada have increased substantially.
