Aug. 26--The nerve-racking process involving military base closings could have been worse - much, much worse - for Florida. But there is still a lesson to be learned for regions like ours that rely too much on one employment sugar daddy.
Overall, the Sunshine State managed to not only avoid economic hardship, but also cash in on the realignment of military facilities and resources.
Not every Florida city with a substantial military presence was unscathed. Pensacola, our neighbor to the west, may lose 900 jobs as the result of other proposals that the Base Realignment and Closure Commission approved or is considering.
