Toxic algae ID'd in Taylor.

Aug. 26--Red-tide algae was detected in a water sample collected this week off the Taylor County coast, but researchers said they don't know whether it caused a fish kill in the area last week.

Red tide is a toxic algae bloom that kills marine life and can be dangerous to people. A red tide off the coast of southwestern Florida since January has been causing respiratory problems, killing fish. It is also suspected of killing sea turtles and dolphins.

Thousands of dead fish were reported killed last Thursday about 10 miles off the coast of Keaton Beach. Researchers said they don't know whether red tide from the Tampa area had spread north.
