WASHINGTON _ Illinois lost its bid to keep its Air National Guard fighter jet wing in Springfield during a final day of deliberations Friday by the base closing commission, while two other states _ South Dakota and New Mexico _ won hard fought victories to save major Air Force bases the Pentagon wanted to close.
The nine-member, independent Base Realignment and Closure Commission voted 8-1 to move the 15 F-16s of the Illinois' Air Guard's 183rd Fighter Wing to Ft. Wayne, Ind.
