HAMPTON - The ax that ended centuries of military occupation at Fort Monroe fell with little fanfare Wednesday when the Defense Base Realignment and Closure Commission voted unanimously to scrap the historic Army post.
No public debate accompanied the decision, despite months of protests, plea s and propos als by local leaders trying to save the fort.
"It was just really not a contested issue within the commission," said BRAC Commissioner James H. Bilbray, a former Democratic congressman from Nevada. "It was hardly discussed."
