WASHINGTON _ Tony La Russa has won 2,197 regular-season games as a major league manager, so the man clearly knows how to run a game. But Sundays' 6-0 win over the Washington Nationals was a La Russa masterpiece.
The festivities at dumpy RFK Stadium won't garner much national attention, and victory No. 83 on the Cardinals' winding road to autumn soon will be forgotten. But even those Cardinals fans who howl at the moon hoping for Whitey Herzog's return must concede that this was an impressive piece of work by La Russa.
