PICTURE an idyllic scene. One of a charming, archetypal English cricket club and its ground, set in a rural landscape, dotted by the grand merchant houses of east Wirral.
This was the natural habitat of Birkenhead's proud, professional classes which had emerged during the Victorian era, although Oxton village itself, about a quarter mile from the ground, is much older.
Oxton Cricket Club (where you could also play tennis and hockey) was at the top of Flatt Lane, a primeval, dry river bed, older than even the most antediluvian fruit cake sent by listeners to Radio 4's Test Match Special commentary team.
