SHORTLY before 10 o'clock yesterday morning, Ian Botham crouched alongside the Trent Bridge strip to deliver his pitch report.
Glancing up, he saw Simon Jones queuing to bowl at a single stump on an adjoining wicket.
Botham shook a huge fist and gave a great snarl of encouragement. Jones nodded affably, apparently grateful for this benediction from one of the game's icons. He then strolled out to produce a spell of pace bowling which was exceptional even by the current rarefied standards of England's attack.
