Rebel Gen. Simon Bolivar Buckner surrendered Fort Donelson, but not his Kentucky hospitality.
After he ran up the white flag, the Hart County, Ky., native asked Yankee Gen. Lew Wallace to breakfast. Twenty-three years later, Buckner agreed to serve as a pallbearer for Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, to whom he relinquished Fort Donelson.
"They all knew each other before the Civil War," said Jimmy Jobe, historian at Fort Donelson National Battlefield, near Dover. "Buckner and Grant, especially, were old friends. They were at West Point at the same time and fought together in the Mexican War."
