The basics: The 22 Apostle Islands make up an archipelago off the northern coast of Wisconsin in Lake Superior. Madeline Island, at 14 miles long and 3 miles wide, is the largest, and the only one with year-round residents. The islands boast rugged and beautiful landscapes, including sea caves, sandy beaches and old-growth forests, and a healthy population of northwoods wildlife, including black bears, white-tail deer and, recently on Madeline, wolves.
