Aug. 29--NORFOLK -- Dr. Sergio Oehninger was involved in the earliest days of in-vitro fertilization, back when many people doubted that fertilizing a woman's egg in a laboratory dish could ever create healthy babies.
Over the next two decades, Oehninger, clinical director of the Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School, has watched infertility treatments explode despite some passionate critics. The 52-year-old native of Uruguay, a married father of four, hopes to expand the Jones Institute's reach on the Peninsula, perhaps seeing patients in its Newport News office three to five days a week.
