NEW YORK -- Although Mac Drysdale, head of the International Wool Secretariat, is optimistic about the long-term growth of wool, his feelings are clouded by a number of uncertainties.

Drysdale, chairman of the IWS, said he's encouraged by the fiber's growth in several apparel markets, especially in the U.S., and the IWS's "Cool Wool" campaign -- a new program targeting lighter-weight uses for the fiber.

However, the volatility of wool prices, the uncertainty surrounding this Saturday's government elections in Australia and the fact that the majority of Australian wool growers are swimming in a sea of red ink all serve to temper Drysdale's enthusiasm.
