Last year, SBC announced a $4 billion deep fiber initiative, code-named Project Lightspeed, to deploy fiber to the node and deliver voice, video and data services to 18 million households across 13 states by the end of 2007. Much of the technology foundation for this ambitious effort is taking place at SBC Laboratories. Managing Editor Al Senia sat down with Ralph Ballart, vice president of broadband at SBC Laboratories, for an update on the project, which is expected to launch later this year.
America's Network: What's the current state of Project Lightspeed? Ralph Ballart: We set the bogey of passing 18 million households by the end of 2007.
