Richard Parsons has a reputation as a peacemaker--a skill that has gotten plenty of exercise since he took the helm of the company created out of the merger of multimedia conglomerate Time Warner and online upstart AOL.
Sometimes, getting Time Warner executives in line requires a particularly aggressive style of diplomacy. The company's chairman and CEO "has been intimately involved in smacking heads together and saying, 'You guys have got to work together,'" says Tim McElgunn, program manager for operator strategies at Stratecast Partners, a communications consultancy.
