Roughly two out of every three American adults are overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

That translates into almost 130 million people at increased risk of for type 2 (non-insulin dependent) diabetes, heart disease, various cancers, and other disabling medical conditions. Obesity was named as a factor in more than 400,000 deaths in 2003. Those numbers are record highs in the U.S., and efforts to reverse the trend are varied and controversial.
