SIX hundred dollars: That was supposed to be the price that formulated non-ruminant blood meal out of rations, but as of last week, buyers had yet to balk at prices that well surpassed that.

Instead, ingredient traders said, buyers continued to line up even though supplies were tight. That only allowed prices to increase more. "Buyers have voiced objections," a trader in the Upper Midwest said, "but there is still good demand." Prices in that region jumped $50 per ton to hit $675.

Prices elsewhere jumped $10, with a trader in the Southeast wondering when exactly buyers would follow through and kick it out of rations. Afterall, he said, $600 was passed ...
