CHICAGO - The Defense Department no longer wants incentive proposals from communities hoping to be selected as one of the sites where the Pentagon will consolidate its finance and accounting facilities.
Twenty finalists had submitted proposals involving over $700 million in proposed bond issues, according to news reports. Those communities had been selected from a field of 216 in December.
U.S. Defense Secretary Les Aspin canceled the Bush administration's incentive plan on Friday while announcing a heavy round of base closings. A spokesman said Aspin considered the incentives competition "contrary to good public policy".
