A brief history and definition of the musical form called bachata: The book titled "Bachata, a social history of a dominican popular music"--published by Temple University Press in 1995 and written by, Deborah Pacini Hernández--defines bachata as "música de amargue" (music of bitterness). The author indicates that this music form emerged from and belongs to a long-standing Pan-Latín American tradition of guitar music, which was typically played by trios of quartets comprised of one or two guitars, with percussion provided by maracas, güiro (gourd scraper), claves (hardwood sticks) and/or bongó.
