The combined ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles may be the busiest port complex in the nation, but competition from the ports of Seattle and Tacoma have local port officials on the run.
Newly elected Assemblywoman Betty Karnette, D-Long Beach, whose district includes both L.A. County ports, was recently named to head a select committee to attract more ships to California ports.
"Seattle's right on our tail," said Karnette, right after being named chair of the select committee. "Without a long-term plan to shore up the ports, we will watch all that business go north."
