COLUMBUS, Ohio _ If Ohio State linebacker Bobby Carpenter scores a touchdown on offense this season, he might be text-messaging a quick thank you to Mike Vrabel.
Buckeyes backup tight end Rory Nicol is suffering from a foot injury that might keep him out until October, so coach Jim Tressel asked Carpenter to help shore up the reserves behind starter Ryan Hamby. It's not out of the question that Carpenter could play both ways Saturday as the Buckeyes open the season against Miami University in Ohio Stadium.
