At just under 200,000 residents, Des Moines is a small town with a city population. Commutes are among the shortest in the country, and residents joke about their "rush minute." Porches are plentiful, and eye contact is often enough to instigate conversations between strangers. A singular 44-story building dominates the modest Des Moines skyline. On the other side of the Des Moines River, the capitol's 23-karat-gold gilded dome is about as flashy as the city gets. People don't live in Des Moines because of its glamour and intrigue. They live here because the city feels comfortable and safe.
